Artist Development

greenroom makes and presents live performative experiences. Events include contemporary theatre and dance, comedy, music and sound, installations, exhibitions, club nights and creative events that wonderfully defy definition.

greenroom is committed to providing a space where emerging artists can develop, grow and succeed; a space where raw talent is nurtured; a focal point for encouraging creative individuals and their ideas.

greenroom offers a number of initiatives for emerging artists:

emergency

An opportunity for North West artists to present a short piece of new performance in a packed two day event that attracts large audiences. Emergency takes place in late September or early October, opens for proposals in early July for an August deadline. In partnership with hÅb. greenroom is also a partner in ‘poolside emergency- a brand new sister platform taking place at The Bluecoat (Liverpool) which took place on 22 May 2010 – check back in January each year for future ‘poolside opportunities.

Method Lab

A selection of artists receive a package of support including a small commission fee, rehearsal space, mentoring, peer support and access to technical resources in order to present the developed piece at the Method Lab showcase in April. Artists are selected through the emergency platform from the previous Autumn, and must present work at emergency to be eligible for Method Lab selection. In partnership with hÅb.

Turn

An open submission dance platform for North West dancers and dance-makers aged 18 and above. North West based dancers or dance-makers looking for an opportunity to present performance work are invited to submit proposals of finished pieces or excerpts of dance, works in progress and sited dance performances in and around greenroom building, for a new a micro-festival. Turn takes place in March, opens for proposals in early September with an end of October deadline. In partnership with hÅb and DiGM.

Hazard

Hazard is Manchester’s unique micro-festival of all things bizarre and playful. So far we’ve wrapped Cathedral Gardens in fluttering hazard tape, brought shop dummies to life, circumnavigated the city by canoe and unleashed giant dancing traffic cones…

Instant Win!

Based on a 60-second pitch to a panel of judges and an audience, one artist is selected and receives a £500 commission together with a package of support in order to realise their creative idea at greenroom. Instant Win! competition takes place in February, registration opens in January and closes the week before the competition.

Larkin’ About

Reinventing Manchester’s playtime Larkin’ About present regular live gaming events in and around greenroom. If you have an idea for a game, would like to volunteer of like to simply find out more please email larkin.about2009@gmail.com

Programming

greenroom also programmes new performance from across the UK and from all parts of the world, and supports this work with short residencies, workshops and creative projects, discussion events and collaborations with other arts organisations.

Other Creative Events

We also host a number of artists and artist groups who run their own events in our workspace and bar/mezzanine areas.  This is often a fantastic point of access for audiences wanting to try something a bit different, and an entry-point for artists looking to try out new ideas.

Visuals

greenroom exhibits 2D visual art within our openspace and box office foyer for 1-2 months at a time. From Autumn 2010 Blank Media Collective are curating this programme.

Associate Artists (scheme under review)

An ongoing scheme providing access to facilities and resulting in creative partnerships. Many associate artists have participated in other greenroom initiatives.

Resident Artist (scheme no longer running)

This was a year long paid residency with support from all areas of greenroom.

Ready? (scheme no longer running)

Ready? was a new short-term residency scheme for artists who are somewhere between ‘emerging’ and ‘established’. The residencies culminated in four new works that were presented at greenroom in 2007.

Breathing Space (scheme no longer running)

Breathing Space was a national commissioning and touring project that sought to bring innovative new live art and performance to audiences across the UK and beyond. The project was initiated by Arnolfini (Bristol), and partnered with greenroom (Manchester), Tramway (Glasgow) and The Junction (Cambridge).
