greenroom makes and presents live performative experiences.

Sometimes we call it live art, performance, theatre, dance, stand-up, cabaret.

Our trademark is experimentation: pushing at the boundaries of traditional artforms – from theatre to visual art, film to music, dance to stand-up comedy: fusing them, confusing them, deconstructing them, reconstructing them.

greenroom is a theatre like no other. We may have a black box at our core but the whole building (and beyond) becomes a performance space. Much of the work is free, no two days are the same, the unexpected is expected. The public is invited in both to experience and to engage: in open-mic events, creative gaming, discussion fora and workshops; to contribute a story to an artistic process or even to become performers in a show.

greenroom aims to:

  • support, develop and present live art and experimental practice and practitioners:

o We support artists and help them develop, grow and succeed in communicating their ideas and stories to audiences with a creative appetite

o We enable artists - visual artists, performers, film-makers, dancers, writers, comedians - to realise their ideas in a live context through images, sounds, movement and words

o We are open to new people and new ideas – we actively bring new artists into the building. We spot the genesis of an idea or the embryonic signs of a new talent and nurture it to develop

o We embrace our relationships with established artists whose continuing practice, knowledge and skill feeds the development of new generations.

  • develop audiences for this work by engaging them in processes and work produced (connecting artists and audiences);

o We aim to make audiences feel and think, to offer experiences that are visceral and intellectual, sensory and emotive;

o We present work that is involving, connecting artists and audiences in an exchange of ideas between real people telling real stories, often autobiographical.

o We present work that is about diversity of experience – stories from different backgrounds, cultures, abilities, histories. Rooted in the contemporary, the urban experience: stories that can add to or reshape our understanding of the world and its people.

o We go out beyond our four walls to involve real people in real situations in art that is risk-taking, innovative and challenging.

We achieve our aims through a range of activities:

o An all year round public programme of performances and creative events

o Platform events for new and emerging artists

o Artist support schemes and platforms

o Commissioning of new work

o Participation and public engagement projects and initiatives

Our process is to provide a safe space where artists can take risks and we are keen to push the issues of how the public receives art.

Audiences play an important and active role. We seek to directly challenge the conventional passivity of a theatre or exhibition audience by breaking down the fourth wall, stimulating exchange between artist and audience and providing points of creative collaboration between artist and audience
