greenroom exists to develop, present and promote contemporary performance within an experimental and multi-disciplinary context. We define ‘contemporary’ literally as ‘of the moment’.

We work to deliver this through the following objectives:

  • To actively facilitate the personal and creative development of emerging artists and to provide opportunities for the presentation of work
  • To present audiences in Greater Manchester and beyond with unique opportunities to view and enjoy work which is artistically and intellectually uncompromising
  • To support the artist in all areas of work and to facilitate relationships for them to create and present work at regional and national venues
  • To present work of the various cultural communities of Greater Manchester
  • To make work accessible to audiences of same and differing cultural backgrounds
  • To advise and assist the development of the work of practising performers and artists within the Greater Manchester area
  • To recognise the value of the artist and other arts professionals and reflect that in pay and working conditions
  • To recognise the special needs of artists and audiences with limited access to cultural activity

Our process is to provide a safe space where artists can take risks and we are keen to push the issues of how the public receives art.

Audiences play an important and active role. We seek to directly challenge the conventional passivity of a theatre or exhibition audience by breaking down the fourth wall, stimulating exchange between artist and audience and providing points of creative collaboration between artist and audience

Fundamentally, we focus on process and development, giving artists time, space, support and opportunities to share their work. We achieve this by working with one Resident Artist each year, and with a range of Associate Artists.

We also facilitate artist development schemes such as Method Lab, a collaboration with hÅb, to support new multi-disciplinary artists in the area of live art and visual performance.

Ultimately, greenroom recognises itself as a conduit for enabling the artist as a political and creative animal, providing a platform for the artist’s voice and visibility.
