Neil Yates’ Five Countries Trio
Two highly inventive trios feature in tonight’s concert, led by restless creative figures from the British contemporary jazz scene.
Neil Yates’ innovative Celtic-jazz fusions take another step forward with this trio: the English trumpeter, based in Wales, brings together the Romanian, Hungarian-based guitarist and the Irish percussionist based in England to explore the folk traditions of each of those countries.
Using live loop effects, the trio creates rich textures of improvised grooves, traditional melodies and fluid, lyrical soloing.
Neil Yates – trumpet, whistle, voice, keyboards
Zsolt Bende – guitar, fiddle
Cormac Byrne – bodhran, percussion
Curios
Tom Cawley’s playing is influenced by both the Romantic classical tradition as well as more recent developments in rock and electronica fields.
The compositions show a high degree of melodic and harmonic invention and dynamic awareness, and give the band a warm, intriguing, interactive chamber-jazz sound.
Tom Cawley – piano
Sam Burgess – double bass
Joshua Blackmore – drums
