Robert Mitchell
To open the evening, one of the UK’s most dazzling keyboard players gives a solo recital of material from his recent solo CD. A member of the F-ire Collective, Robert’s playing embraces such a wide variety of influences: nu-jazz, soul, romantic classical, free jazz…
His technique is breathtaking, and his harmonic and rhythmic ideas are articulate, full of surprising deviations and come at you thick and fast!
Polo Ortí Quintet
Polo Ortí was born in Valencia in 1963, and he is now considered to be one of the most talented and original composers, orchestrators and pianists on the Spanish scene.
His musical achievements and sensibility have earned him numerous prizes and wide recognition.
Having worked with Gary Burton, Lyle Mays, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Pat Metheny, he brings his own quintet to Manchester for the first time to preview new compositions.
A special member of the band is fellow Chicharrero and soulful, enigmatic saxophonist Fermin Rivero, resident and widely active in Manchester for many years in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The band’s sound and material is rooted in the contemporary jazz-fusion idiom, but with a deep harmonic awareness and an almost vocal lyricism.
Polo Ortí – piano, keyboards
Fermin Rivero – tenor saxophone
Juan María Vidal Estariol – guitar
Luismo Valladares – double bass
Juan Ortí – drums
This performance is made possible with the generous support of Instituto Cervantes Manchester.
