Launch party featuring experimental installation performance: Thursday 7 May

Richard Joel Bannister’s current work explores the figure. In drawings and paintings of the self, the images render the reading of internal and external conflicts.

The work focuses primarily on introverted sensations depicting identity, self respect and sexuality: the relationship between the subconscious and the corporeal.

Compositional concerns and the visualisation of internal and external boundaries are crucial. There is a strong reflection of melancholy evident in the direction of his enquiry, expressing emotion through mark making and the application of paint.

With his interest in Queer Theory and the Philosophy of Existentialism, Richard aims to celebrate the figure (in particular the male nude) within contemporary society and culture.

After graduating from Liverpool Hope University in 2007 with a First Class degree in Fine Art with Drama and Theatre Studies, Richard has since been painting and exhibiting full time. In Irrational Boy, Richard showcases a selection of art works and art studies, some of which have never been exhibited before.
