Mark’s brand new group is at once a departure from and a rounding up of his many and varied projects to date: from his early days with Loose Tubes to his more recent projects (Scratch Band, Perfect Houseplants, Robert Wyatt’s Soup Songs and a guest appearance with Radiohead), perhaps most notably with Seb Rochford’s Polar Bear.
Here, the music– taken from his new release In Deep – is open, the compositions freer, and it evolves with extensive improvisatory contributions from the band members. It moves from spacious, free-jazz tinged grooves to the more pastoral, reflective compositions for which Mark is perhaps more widely known.
Mark’s approach to music-making veers away from dazzling displays of technical virtuosity, instead opting for a personal, expressive tone (Dexter Gordon and Wayne Shorter are heroes) in pursuit of a voice that says something different – one that is instantly recognisable and one which connects not only with his collaborating musicians, but with the listener too.
Advance booking is strongly recommended.
Concerts start 7.30pm prompt; latecomers will be asked to wait for a suitable break in the performance.
