This year, mjf launches its inspiring new scheme for commissioning new work from regional jazz composers. Ten, by Matt Owens, combines the two formats of jazz quintet and wind quintet in a special programme of new music which celebrates Matt’s varied playing and compositional styles. This year marks Matt’s 10th year in Manchester, and perhaps surprisingly, this is the first time he has led an ensemble under his name.

The concept for the instrumentation was sparked when Matt saw the Mingus Orchestra perform in New York, and consequently these new compositions will focus on strong melodies and reflect his interest in a very wide range of musical styles. Balancing arranged sections with improvisation, the suite blends elements of jazz, tango, classical, folk, samba, Americana, son and other world musics. There will be special guest appearances from members of the Odbod collective.

A short discussion with Matt will follow the show in the theatre, open to all ticket holders.
