“Images of audiences for performed music fall into two types: the sweaty mosh-pit, or the appreciative connoisseur. Simon Bowcock’s photographs transcend these stereotypes spectacularly, drawing the viewer in to the transcendent, transforming, even sexual nature of being, literally, lost in music.” Greg Hobson, Curator of Photographs, National Media Museum

Sound Effects is an unprecedented series of photographs portraying the experience of listening to live music.

Typically made in near darkness, the pictures capture their subjects totally immersed in the music, oblivious to the camera’s presence. Shot in every kind of venue from Strangeways to southern Spain, these rough, unmanipulated and colourful images evoke a range of moods and feelings.
