Firstly, a big thank you to all who packed out greenroom last Friday for The End. It was a very special evening; filled with bananas, bearsuits, fireworks, hundreds of cue-cards, a multitude of supermen and many overacted death scenes, some very convincingly performed by our own fair audience. Now with The End behind us, we look forward to greenroom’s final week of public events…

Tickets: £9.50 / £6.50 – Call greenroom Box Office 0161 615 0500.

Reckless Sleepers present Schrödinger at The Lowry, Mon 6 – Tue 7 June
In 1933 Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to quantum mechanics. He theorised a box in which a cat can exist as living and dead at the same time.

In 1988 Reckless Sleepers built that box, and now, over a decade later, they are climbing back inside. This visually mesmerising performance sways between question and answer, chaos and order, what we can measure and what we can’t. The impossible is probable, truth and illusion are inseparable and laws are made, bent and then broken.
Based on the original performance Schrödingers Box presented at greenroom in 1999.

‘poolside emergency returns to the Bluecoat on Saturday 11 June (12pm-7pm, FREE, note earlier finish time) for its second frenetic year. Last year our artists were crushed by a giant knitted boulder, fed soup by an eating machine and were responsible for ending over 70 imaginary love affairs from the front seat of a car parked in the Bluecoat courtyard. This year we intend to be even more outlandish so join us on Saturday 11 June for this free festival of the beautiful and the bonkers, the challenging and the witty. Co-produced by the Bluecoat and hÅb.

Flare International Festival of New Theatre, 4–9 July 2011, is a new festival of groundbreaking theatre by artists drawn from across Europe and beyond, being presented at Capitol Theatre (MMU), Contact, and Zion Arts Centre (sadly greenroom is no longer a partner venue due to our closure).
Scheduled to coincide with, and complement, the Manchester International Festival, Flare will present the work of some of the best new young theatre artists, showcasing the creativity and talents of the theatrical innovators of the future. Alongside the programme of 24 performance events selected from 8 different countries, Flare will also feature performance workshops, a major panel discussion on the future of theatre, live music and cabaret, and a fantastic closing party.

Schedule published and tickets on sale from Wednesday 1 June. www.flarefestival.com

Our Legacy

Although this is greenroom’s last week open to the public, do look out for another e-mail from greenroom in the next week or so, as we’re hoping to sign-post you to some ‘must-see’ events that are either ‘legacy’ projects – that were already started or planned before the decision to close was made – and others that are the sort or events we think you’d want to hear about.

love greenroom x x

This Friday, Michael Pinchbeck returns to greenroom, following the hugely enjoyable The Post Show Party Show in 2009; this time joined by 2009 Method Lab artist Ollie Smith. Inspired by the stage direction from The Winter’s Tale, ‘Exit pursued by a bear’, The End (May 20, 8pm) explores endings and exits and the re-enactment of real life events to investigate absence and loss. The End asks why we perform and how we will know when to stop and is Pinchbeck’s last piece for theatre.

Call for proposals

Up The Wall, curated by Chester Performs & hÅb, 21-22 October 2011

Chester Performs is now calling for proposals for sited works for this year’s Up the Wall, an evening festival of live art, intervention, installation and new media works.

Taking place for the first time around Chester’s Castle, Chester Performs are looking for artists to take part by contributing work to the event, either through contextually relevant existing work or newly created site specific performances and installations. Chester Performs is particularly interested in works which seek to explore our relationship with borders and identity, of how psychogeography, ancient and modern, affects the places in which we live and the cultures with which we associate.

Taking the castle as site and starting point proposals are welcomed for performance and live art, mapping (GPS and architectural) and signaling projects, tours and walks, projection and installation.

An integral part of Up the Wall is to provide a background for the region’s installation, visual, live and new media artists. It is suitable for established and emerging professional artists. Artists are encouraged to work across art forms and provide a platform for collaborative work.

Deadline: Thursday 30 June 2011 – To download a full Artist’s Brief and Proposal form go to chesterperforms.com/Content/opportunities.aspx

As you may already be aware, greenroom will close to the public very soon. However, there are still some high quality events left to enjoy before we close; from our final open-mic poetry night Freed Up to the return of Michael Pinchbeck in the highly acclaimed touring show The End; from the fabulous celebrations of the Mother’s Pride weekend to our final big EXIT party.

Every year we have asked you, our visitors and audience to complete a survey about what they think of greenroom, and even though we’re closing, we still value this your views. Over the years, we feel that we have generally offered a valuable, high quality service: from last year’s survey, 77% of you said you were satisfied or very satisfied with our services, and 79% felt what we had to offer was valuable or very valuable.

Two Peas Without A Pod – Levantes Dance Company

This enchanting performance was a pleasure to watch from start to finish. Bethanie Harrison and Eleni Edipidi designed a warm and happy atmosphere while sharing their world with the audience. About to go on holiday, we’re introduced to the pair while they’re waiting for their taxi. Once away, there’s a whirlwind of synchronized dance movement, fun music and a clear representation of a strong relationship.

They told a typical holiday tale of two friends , having a holiday romance and almost falling out with each other over the new object of their affections. (Who was a very co-operative ‘mysterious stranger’ from the audience). Some of the stage was awash with bright colours and decorative staging to represent their home and break environment while the other half remained bare and empty, almost reflecting their close friendship – it’s all or nothing. A bond of extremes. The imagery created by the feathers in their hair, patterned dresses and coloured wallpaper was so unique to the story. This, along with holiday scenes projected on the back screen made the performance intriguing and delightful.

One of my favourite parts was when paper aeroplanes landed on the stage to represent their flight home – and they get back to life as they know it. But being a big Elvis fan, the part of the story I enjoyed the most was hearing his version of ‘Fools Rush In’ fill the theatre while Bethanie and Eleni swung gracefully from their trapeze. Their show was a spirited mix of love, comedy and obsession and was constantly interesting.

Belong To This Band – Kings of England

On returning to the theatre space the audience see the members of Kings Of England lined up and ready to perform. Each with a drink in hand, they raise a toast before launching into the story of Henry. The folk style songs were full of life and character as they relayed the different chapters of the anti-hero’s life. The group sang in unison as well as solo parts from some members. The piece was engaging and well thought out with and each section suitably accompanied by music. There was a good sense of companionship amongst the group as they all did their part to celebrate the life and death that Henry experienced.

The part of Henry was played by King of England’s leading man Simon Bowes. It was clear from the outset that the story would be about him as he ensured that he stuck out from the rest of the group by the way he stood and carried himself. He was different to the others just as Henry was so different from those he grew up with and became involved with.

The props they used were paper cut outs of dogs, antlers and musical instruments. I felt these unusual items were thrown into the mix to enhance the fun side of the story. At certain points the audience was addressed directly by individual members of the company. It was reminiscent of a priest standing at a pulpit, giving their sermon to an eager congregation; these are the facts of Henry’s existence and when he died his spirit continued on for a new journey.

I really enjoyed this piece and thought the company as a whole worked incredibly well together and gave great life to the story they told.

You are cordially invited to say your fond farewell to greenroom, Manchester’s only dedicated new performance venue for nearly quarter of a century.

Following funding cuts announced earlier this year, greenroom will complete its final public programme at the end of May, and cease to trade in the following months.

For nearly 25 years, greenroom has been home to a huge number and vast range of people:

the passionate artists that have created new work at greenroom

the committed audiences that have appreciated and supported that work

the adventurous members of the public who have taken part in participation projects

the artists and companies that have hired our spaces

the funders and partners that have enabled so much new and interesting work to have first life

the people that generally think we’re a friendly place to have a nice pint

and the excellent staff at greenroom that have made it all possible

If you fit into any of the above categories, or generally feel that you’re a ‘friend of greenroom’ past or present, and would like to say your goodbye’s, then come on down to our EXIT party. Here’s the deal…

Timings: open 4pm onwards, come early or late. However, it could prove to be popular, and we do have limited capacity. Families are welcome during the early evening.

Drink: Bring a bottle of something sparkling to toast greenroom, though the bar will be open so be prepared to drink the bar dry. Everything must go!

Activities: There’ll be DJ’s in the performance space so be prepared to dance the night away or just have a good natter in the bar. Microphone available for those who’d like to say a few words and feather boas for those who want to get giddy…

Call in to raise a toast and say cheerio. We hope you can make it.

love greenroom x x

Tonight, greenroom & Pigeon Theatre present The Art of Conversation – a final word: the outcome (May 12, 7:30pm). For the past eight weeks now, a group of disparate, unconnected women have come together to share stories, chat, muse, and ponder about… well most things really.

The Art of Conversation, greenroom’s unique participation project, led by associate artists, the all-female Pigeon Theatre, has focussed on the craft of female conversation. This year the project has been supported by Manchester City Council and marks the centenary of International Women’s Day, celebrating 100 years of women’s achievements. The weekly sessions have been aimed at getting women talking about how we communicate; the difference between ‘speaking’ and ‘conversing’, and how we adapt our conversation to suit different audiences.

The project culminates tonight with one-off performances and happenings from the participants in various spaces around greenroom. You are invited to join the ‘chatty women’ and get a glimpse of the discussions that have been held over the duration of the project.

Communication is curious – female communication doubly so.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from this project, it’s that listening is the key to communication… make sure you keep an eye out (and an ear open) for events that could be happening around you all evening… we invite you to perfect the art of eves-dropping…

FREE – 7:30pm. No need to book.

Tomorrow, Foster & Déchery go on ‘a quest for History: the big one, written about in books’ in Epic (May 13, 8pm). This playful and experimental journey through the past hundred years, not only explores the History of memorable dates and names you learn at school but also ‘the personal one, the human one, the one you can relate to’. The performers attempts to track down their own family histories, results in the unearthing of some secrets of an English family in the Northern mines, a French family caught up in Paris’s May 1968 turmoil and a Turkish grandmother on a long walk to Istanbul in search of the country’s small, Jewish community.

Please note that both the pre-show workshop with Foster & Dechery and the SeedFund performance from Mary Eddowes on this date have unfortunately been cancelled.

SPECIAL OFFER: 2 for 1 Tickets to Epic, if you call greenroom Box Office 0161 615 0500 by 6pm on Friday 13 May – £9.50/£6.50

Next Thursday, join us for The Art of Conversation – a final word: the outcome (May 12, 7:30pm).

The project culminates on the 12 May with one-off performances and happenings from the participants in various spaces around greenroom.

FREE from 7:30pm. No need to book.

Next Friday, Foster & Déchery go on ‘a quest for History: the big one, written about in books’ in Epic (May 13, 8pm).

Get into greenroom! Book your tickets for Epic by 6pm Monday 9 May and get your £9.50 tickets for £6.50. Call greenroom Box Office 0161 615 0500 or buy online.
